Like couch protectors that'll withstand your cat's sharp claws and a sturdy kitchen trash can your dog won't be able to knock over.

BuzzFeed Staff

Promising review: "Okay, so, this is by far the BEST trashcan we've ever had. It is well-made, sturdy, looks very nice, is a perfect size, and does exactly what it supposed to. Most importantly, this is literally the only trash can, short of getting a bear-proof one, that has been able to keep our obnoxious bloodhound out of it. We've tried so many different ones, including the black plastic Simplehuman one with the lock, which they advertise as dog-proof; and nothing has withstood that dog...until this one. It's too heavy for her to knock over and the lid sits very flush so it's impossible for her to get her nose under it. With the 'dog-proof' one, they knocked it over, because it's too light, and literally chewed the plastic hinges off of it....Not with this one, though. If you too, have a hellhound like us, and are looking for a great trashcan that can keep them out, but also looks incredibly nice, this really is your can. It's worth every penny, and in hindsight, it's actually worth even more to us than we paid for it...That's how great it is....Buy it....You won't regret it...unless it leads you to default on your mortgage...Then you might regret it....But if you have the cash, this is it." —Brady

I've been using this trapper mat for over a year now, and while it's pretty much impossible to eliminate all litter from your home if you own even one cat, let alone multiple, this mat has made keeping the floor of my litter box room MUCH more manageable. Unlike other mats, where the litter just kind of sits on top and eventually gets kicked elsewhere, this mat is designed so that the litter falls through the holes and stays inside the mat until you're ready to dump it. It's made out of an EVA material that's supposed to be gentle enough for cat paws, and my two kitties don't seem to have a problem walking on it. I *highly* recommend getting the larger 30-by-24-inch mat to extend the coverage area — I initially got the smaller one but went back for the larger size and it's perfect. Note that the mat will probably have a fold down the middle when it first arrives, but just give it some time and weigh it down with something if needed; it'll lay flat.

Promising review: "This works exactly as intended, plus it’s cat pee–proof! Our cat got sick with a UTI and kept peeing right outside the little box on the mat. It was super easy to clean each time and does not smell like pee. It’s awesome!" —Kandace

Promising review: "I have two cats; one is an avid climber. They are inside-only cats (I live near open desert that is full of coyotes), but I like to leave the door open with the screen door secured shut so they can enjoy the air and sounds of outside, but I did not trust the standard screen material to stand up to their claws. Damage is one thing, but I definitely did not want them to tear the screen out enough to escape the house when I was in another room. So I was hoping to find a screen material stout enough to give me the peace of mind to keep the door open during the pleasant months, so I gave this one a try. Soon after installation I heard the familiar sound of claws testing out the new screen door. Despite even finding one cat six feet off the ground climbing up the screen, there was not a hint of damage to the screen material! Its has also held in the sliding door frame very well, even with the weight of the cat suspended on it. No bulges or sags! I have had it installed for over four months now and there are still no rips or tears anywhere and I have not had to adjust anything despite cats climbing, scratching at it, and bouncing off of it while chasing their toys. The fact that this stuff is only a few dollars more expensive than the standard fiberglass screen is astonishing, I think it is worth many times the price!" —K. Michals

Promising reviews: "Huskies are very active and run and slide and jump and pounce...not once has the rug moved." —Richard D. Wilder

"When playing, my dogs would run and power slide across the floor on my living room rug. I placed this pad on my hardwood floors, under my rug. Rug stays in place and power sliding has stopped. Now, they use my living room rug as a WWE mat. I love my entertainment crew!" —Clandon

Get it from Amazon for $13.40+ (available in two thicknesses and 15 sizes).

Promising reviews: "We have had the rug for six months. I have washed it probably five times because of poop or throw-up on the rug from our three dogs or two kids. It had help up very well. Never had a problem in the washer if dryer. Just always do it in its own load to make sure it gets everything." —Jill

"Easy to clean. We have a senior Labrador who can’t always 'hold it.' We bought this rug and feed her on it just in case she pees...yes, she’s had a couple accidents and because of the rubber backing it didn’t seep through. Very happy about that! Also, the rug lays flat even on carpet and doesn’t scoot around." —ginny

Promising reviews: "Our cat was destroying the corner of our brand-new sectional, so I was excited to try these out. I didn’t want to try sprays or anything with pins that puncture the couches. I was a little worried about the quality of the adhesive, but the screen has been holding up and my cat no longer scratches that corner. There are plenty of screens in the package to add more if she finds a new spot." —NKakanis

"Cat-proof. It really works!" —Nana Tracy

It can also help discourage smaller animals from hiding under furniture!

Promising reviews: "A must-have for ALL pet owners. This contraption is genius and will save cat (and dog) owners time and frustration retrieving toys. We used this beneath our oven and it works PERFECTLY. Cat can't destroy it (the way she shredded the foam insulation we had stuffed under there before) and we no longer have to get the yardstick out when literally all of her toys are 'gone.' Yes, this is a challenge to install, but 100% worth it. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat." —Allison Goldstein

"I ordered these to keep my dog’s toys from rolling under the sofas because he loses his mind when his ball is stuck. I wasn’t sure that they’d stay up when his big paws hit them, especially because I attached them to carpet but they are holding up just fine even after a few chewing! They’re more visible than I would like but the function outweighs the downside. I’m really glad I bought these. I ordered two more sets and will probably buy one more just to puppy-proof the rest of my place since they work so well." —Celina Castro

It plugs into the wall, but it also accepts batteries in case of power outages. Also, you can record a 10-second clip of your voice saying something like, "Maggie! It's time to eat!" so they get a consistent verbal cue that they recognize.

Promising review: "This automatic feeder is amazing as it is totally cat-proof!! My two curious kitties have tried every which way to access the food, but have not succeeded. The first night they unplugged the cord from the wall by jostling it around (insert eye roll), but the back-up batteries came in clutch! Such a smart addition! It’s also super easy to set-up, easy to clean, and the portion size is easily adjustable! I recommend it so much, I’m buying another one since one of my cats is quite the food hog. Can’t wait to be able to sleep in past 3:30 a.m.!" —Lauren

I decided to finally give these cord protectors a go recently and can absolutely vouch for their effectiveness. One of my cats, Sneaky, is a notorious cord chewer and particularly loves going to town on the charging cable for his automatic water fountain — you can check out the damage above. I was getting to the point where I was afraid it'd stop working entirely, so I ordered these protectors in the 1/2-inch size. They snap on and off *so* easily — flexible enough for removal, but thick and durable enough that your kitty's teeth are no match against the thick wire loom. Sneaky pretty quickly realized he'd finally been defeated once he discovered these on his favorite chewing spots (I also applied a protector to my poor MacBook charging wire, which was another target), and I haven't seen him even attempting to chew anymore.

I like that these come in multiple colors as well as different lengths and sizes so you can order as much as you actually need. You just snip off as much as you need for a particular area, so I used a shorter piece for my water fountain cable and a much longer one for my MacBook charging cable to protect the whole area. I ordered the 1/2-inch diameter ones, but you could definitely go down to the 1/4-inch or even 1/8-inch sizes if you're only planning to cover a single thin cable so it's not quite as bulky as mine looks above. If you're planning to cover multiple cables at once, you'd want to stick with the bigger sizes.

Promising review: "I have this in three different widths for chew-proofing the upstairs of our house, where our young house rabbit is allowed to free range. I don't see any signs of damage, like fraying, now." —Louise

Cats who like to tear big holes in litter box liners make them pretty much pointless to use, but reviewers say these heavy-duty liners are sturdy enough that they're basically claw-proof.

Promising review: "This is a lifesaver! I wish I’d discovered these sooner; it would have saved me several unpleasant litter box cleanings. It’s very sturdy and thick enough to withstand my cat’s feverish scratching and burying. This is especially great if you have friends cat-sitting for you, as they can just throw away the bag to avoid having to deal with the litter." —Gabriela

I've used this exact gate in the past and found it really easy to set up in my doorway, and it's *extremely* sturdy once you adjust the tension properly — I can't see any dogs being able to break through, and it's made of metal, which discourages chewing. I personally used it when I adopted my younger cat and needed to slowly introduce him to my older cat. The space between the bars were wide enough for them to see and sniff each other without any possibility of them fighting. I will say that once the younger cat got braver, he was able to leap over the top of it, but my older, bigger cat could not (which meant the younger cat always had a means of escape). So keep that in mind, depending on your use case. You can also install it a few inches above the ground to get some extra height.

Promising reviews: "We just rescued a kitty but already have a dog at home. They are getting to know each other slowly but the dog is very curious and tends to play 'follow the leader' with the cat wherever she goes. We bought this gate so that when the cat wants some time to herself she can go into the spare room and the dog can't follow. It works VERY well. It's a nice height." —SC128

"After using several gates, this one is amazing. It stays up even when my dogs are pouncing up against it. My friends comment its like Fort Knox in our house now with this gate. There is also somewhat of a toddler-proof latch that makes it difficult to open with one hand, but there are ways to close it without using it so we love it!" —Erin M. Cassidy

Promising review: "This product works perfectly. I have two cat food-loving large dogs and and old cat who could no longer jump up onto a dog-proof eating area. The Door Buddy allows the cat to eat on the floor without competition for the food from the dogs. I also want to add that this company provides some of the best customer support I've ever received." —maggiemoosmom

Promising review: "This is truly the best that I've used...nine cats and two dogs and there are bound to be some mishaps. I do everything I can to make sure my home is as pet-proof as possible. So far this has conquered throw up, hairballs, and a pee accident with little to no scrubbing so it's easy to use and has a mild smell. You get a large 33-quart bin and a smaller, stackable 12-quart bin, so you could store dog and cat food separately, or just use the top bin to store treats or supplies. For cats, you could also use the bottom bin for storing their litter bag and the top bin for food — the options here are endless! The wheels on the bottom bin make it easy to roll around, a helpful feature for those with limited mobility or less arm strength. A scoop is included!

FYI, I use a similar bin from this brand for storing my cats' dry food and love it — especially the fact that their products are made of food-safe polypropylene, aka are BPA-free.

Promising reviews: "Not only are these containers airtight; they are also dog-proof! I left my three boxers inside the house with two sets of these containers and came home to find them in various places in the house, with numerous scratches and bite marks, but still closed and the contents safe! Attempts at self-feeding were foiled! Great product!" —Diana Nicholson

"Not only airtight, but also cat-proof. My hungry little tiger does try to chew on the corners of the container when he thinks his bowl needs to be filled, and it's been holding up fine. Love that it's on wheels and have used the little box to hold toys, catnip, treats, and other kitty accessories. Recommended!" —AL

Promising review: "We bought two of these to transport our two cats during a 13-hour relocation. The carriers are definitely cat-proof against fits of clawing. I was afraid the mesh would tear when one of them started clawing hysterically at it, but it held up well. There were no tears or scratches and there was plenty of space for a fully grown cat to lie down comfortably, with plenty of room to maneuver. I liked the mesh sides, which made it easier to check on the cats without having to open it up. The plush mat was detachable so we could wrap puppy pads around it for the journey, and the side pocket was useful for storage of extra puppy pads with treats." —reamethable

It has a smaller door at the bottom for easy feeding without letting the dog out!

Promising review: "Definitely recommend! I purchased this crate after my 1.5-year-old Lab/Akita mix figured out how to get out of his other crate on his second time being crated. This is a dog that also figured out how to unlock and slide open our bedroom window to get out into the backyard. We've been using this crate for a couple months now and he hasn't been able to escape out of it. I love that it's on wheels so we can move it around as needed to clean under/behind it, or if we want him in another room. This crate has given me peace of mind that he is safe and secure while we are out of the house, without the hefty price tag of other similar style crates." —Lacey Lee

"Amazing harness! My kitty has always been good on the leash but she recently broke free from her collar. This harness is very well made, she didn’t fuss at all when I put it on and seemed to forget about it within minutes. She tried bolting after a chipmunk but the harness held true! Love love love it! Promising reviews: "Our Goldendoodle Butter LOVES his 'Baby.' He carries her everywhere he goes. He even tries to bring her on walks. Butter is very possessive over Baby. Baby has been washed over and over. Butter has torn up every stuffed toy he’s ever owned and Baby is the most durable toy he’s ever had. This toy is tear-proof. It’s the best. Thank you for thinking of this. Butter says thank you." —Sita L.

"I bought this a year and a half ago and I’m so impressed with the durability of this product that I feel compelled to write a review. It has survived, not one, but two puppies! The new puppy has a habit of dragging it around, outside, upstairs, downstairs...everywhere. Both puppies slept through the night right away with the help of this product. If I forget to put it in the new one's crate, he whines until I bring it. I was reluctant to spend $40 on this thing, but after a year and a half it’s the only thing that’s lasted. I would pay $100. I don’t know what they make it with, but it’s extremely chew-proof. I wish all plush dog toys were made this well. If you splurge on anything for your new puppy — this is worth it." —Nicole H.

Get it from Amazon for $39.50 (available in six colors).

Promising reviews: "My dog is only 15 pounds, but he is a POWER chewer. It takes him about a minute flat to seek and destroy the squeaker in any toy. I bought two of these mini ducks, and one of their squeakers is still going strong! The other one has been silenced, but it took my dog a week to do it. Usually after breaking the squeakers, he also breaks the toy open to try to get them out. These fluffy little ducks don't have any signs of tearing from where he's chewed (and I assure you, he's tried). I'm considering buying him a big one just for fun, and when these finally bite it (probably a year from now tbh), I'll definitely buy more!" —Rachel

"I have bought two of these toys already. I have a small chihuahua and she loves these. She has lost both of the ones I have bought but when she had them she took them everywhere with her. She had her first one for six months and it was very durable, especially because she was always chewing and trying to tear it apart." —roberta

Promising review: "My 1-year-old Pyredane loves this big ball. She carries it around and loves to chew the rope and the ball. Her greatest delight is in gnashing and destroying toys, and my delight is if they last more than a week (ballistic material toys don't stand a chance with her). The Jolly Pet Romp-n-Roll makes us both happy. We play chase games with it but she also enjoys playing with it by herself. There are teeth marks all over the ball and the rope is a little frayed, but both are holding up fabulously. The ball was a little stiff new from the package, but after sitting in the yard for about a week, the ball softened enough that she can squeeze it. When she finally destroys it, I'll definitely buy another." —L. Colburn

Promising reviews: "Fantastic product. My cat just loves this cat bed. Suction is powerful and the cable is strong and chew-proof. No holes or sticky stuff to attach a great seat for kitty." —F. Smith

"I have proof of just how sturdy this is. I was in the kitchen doing dishes when I heard 'Wow, what a nice swing!' I didn't think much of it, but when I came back out to the living room, I saw my 3-year-old sitting on the sunny seat kicking her feet as if she was on a swing. Of course I grabbed her off of it as quickly as possible and explained that it was for the kitties and not her, but then it hit me how awesome this seat actually is. My daughter is 42 pounds. So they're not kidding when they say it can hold a bit of weight!!" —Jpiglet86

The sides of this litter box have small paw-shaped holes for ventilation and to let light in so your kitty can see while doing their business!

Promising review: "I tried everything to keep my little dog out of the cat's litter box. This is the only thing that worked. I was a little worried the cat wouldn’t be able to get in the hole but he did effortlessly. I showed him a couple times and he got it easily. This is a godsend product, if nothing else worked for you, like me." —Lauren Niggl

Promising reviews: "These felted catnip balls are such a hit with my cat that I had to buy a set for my sister's cat too. I received mine as a Christmas gift and my boy has loved them. The quality is top notch and they have not deteriorated even after hours of play. By far I’d say this is my cat's favorite cat toy. Thank you Simply B Vermont!" —Lisa Bonfanti

"Darling product, well made — which the cats loved. The felt balls are tightly created so felines cannot readily tear them apart. Prompt, careful shipping to ensure safe arrival. The household cats were 'zooming' around for hours chasing the colorful balls. Pleased with seller and purchase and would recommend." —Kay

Promising reviews: "I have a clever little rabbit who likes to play with this toy. If I leave it sitting around where he can reach it, he'll throw the pieces around. After some use, you may notice tooth wear on the blue plastic knobs as the animal nibbles on them, but so far he hasn't been able to break or bite whole pieces off, and they're definitely too big to be swallowed. A good teaching/training toy. I have successfully been able to train the rabbit to retrieve the blue pieces for a reward if I roll or toss them across the floor, so that's a whole new game we've invented with this toy." —Doctor Teatime

"I bought this for my ferrets. It's the perfect size and material so they can't damage or get injured on it. Once they figured it out they were all over it. Is a definite win in my book." —Madeline Elise Wiley

Happy & Polly is a small business with an incredible collection of cutesy cat and dog products, from carriers and scratching posts to water fountains and even apparel.

I've been using this cactus water fountain for a couple of months now and absolutely love it. I've used the cheap plastic kind in the past and noticed that 1) they get dirty fast and are annoying to clean, and 2) cats can knock them over or push them around. This ceramic fountain has solved all my problems, and the best part is that both of my cats actually love drinking out of it! It's hefty and doesn't shift around as they are trying to drink, and there have been no attempts to dismantle it either. It gives off a good flow from either side of the cactus in the middle, and my cats either like to nibble on that or drink around the hole the water flows into. This fountain is also super quiet, though you'll notice it making a bit of a noise when the water gets low (which helps remind you to clean it out and put in fresh water), and it shuts off entirely when out of water for safety. Ample hydration is *so* important for cats, especially if they're mostly on a dry food diet, so it's worth it to invest in a proper watering fountain that's built to last. And this one is.

Promising review: "This fountain is adorable, first of all. It's also incredibly quiet. However, my biggest challenges with a water fountain is my one cat who tries to dismantle every one we try. I had hoped given that this is ceramic and heavier, she'd have a harder time knocking it over or flipping the lid. We've had this in use for about a week, and so far, so good! Even better, she actually likes to drink from it. It's a similar flow to a faucet, which is her favorite water source. I also think because most of the water is under the lid, it doesn't get as filled with fur and food as other open bowl fountains do, so the water seems a lot cleaner, too. Very happy with this purchase!" —K.H.

Promising reviews: "Naughty cat-proof. My one cat has always torn fountains apart because he's rude lol but this is one he can't get apart. I never hear it and it's perfect for us." —nicole

"I saw someone get this for their cats on TikTok, so I thought I would try it out. My cats don't drink enough water, and I've tried moving their food and water to different spots. When I got this fountain though...everything changed. My girl cat is OBSESSED with it. We call it her best friend, because when she isn't drinking from it (or playing with it) she is sitting there just staring at it. It only gets loud if your cat likes the play with the water, which she does. She grabs at it with her paw to drink, or puts her head under it and lets it fall into her mouth. She also drinks it like a normal animal occasionally. My boy cat on the other hand, at first was interested but when he got wet from the stream he was very angry with it. He does drink from it a lot now, but he's found a way to drink without getting his head wet. Moral of the story, they love it and they drink A LOT more water now, and it doubles as a play toy." —Peony

Laylo Pets is a small biz owned by Gabriela Baiter and based in Brooklyn, NY! The shop was a finalist in the 2020 Etsy Design Awards. Just a quick peek at all the modern, orthopedic dogs beds they have will show you exactly why these are such a hit!

Promising review: "This is our second cover for our dog bed and we are really pleased with the quality. Our pup has chewed through two other beds and a blanket, but despite lots of effort, she hasn't been able to make a dent in her Laylo bed or covers yet. I actually purchased before I knew she'd be such a heavy chewer because I thought these beds were super stylish and would fit in well with our home decor, but I'm so pleasantly surprised to find that they're also top-notch quality, stand up to tough chewers/diggers, and totally washable. Highly recommend!" —Courtney Chin

Promising review: "This little sardine 'can' is both a huge hit with the cats as well as being an adorable addition to my office decor. Both cats argue over who gets to sleep on the top or play on the inside. Additionally, we have one cat who is an aggressive scratcher. We are six months in and he has only made some dents in the top. This is a very robust cat scratcher. I will absolutely purchase another one if and when he eventually pulls this thing apart. It’s well worth the price!" —Patrick S. Nouvion

Promising reviewMost importantly, this is literally the only trash can, short of getting a bear-proof one, that has been able to keep our obnoxious bloodhound out of it. My two curious kitties have tried every which way to access the food, but have not succeeded. Can’t wait to be able to sleep in past 3:30 a.m.They snap on and off *so* easily — flexible enough for removal, but thick and durable enough that your kitty's teeth are no match against the thick wire loom.you could definitely go down to the 1/4-inch or even 1/8-inch sizes if you're only planning to cover a single thin cablePromising review:I have this in three different widths for chew-proofing the upstairs of our house, where our young house rabbit is allowed to free range.Promising reviewIt’s very sturdy and thick enough to withstand my cat’s feverish scratching and buryingI personally used it when I adopted my younger cat and needed to slowly introduce him to my older cat.Promising reviews:We bought this gate so that when the cat wants some time to herself she can go into the spare room and the dog can't follow. It works VERY well.It stays up even when my dogs are pouncing up against it. My friends comment its like Fort Knox in our house now with this gate.Promising reviewThe Door Buddy allows the cat to eat on the floor without competition for the food from the dogs.Promising review:I do everything I can to make sure my home is as pet-proof as possible. So far this has conquered throw up, hairballs, and a pee accident with little to no scrubbingPromising reviewsI left my three boxers inside the house with two sets of these containers and came home to find them in various places in the house, with numerous scratches and bite marks, but still closed and the contents safe!My hungry little tiger does try to chew on the corners of the container when he thinks his bowl needs to be filled, and it's been holding up fine.Promising review:The carriers are definitely cat-proof against fits of clawing. I was afraid the mesh would tear when one of them started clawing hysterically at it, but it held up well.Promising reviewWe've been using this crate for a couple months now and he hasn't been able to escape out of it.This crate has given me peace of mind that he is safe and secure while we are out of the housePromising reviews:Well-made, fun colors, and really truly escape-proof for my catThis harness is very well made, she didn’t fuss at all when I put it on and seemed to forget about it within minutes. She tried bolting after a chipmunk but the harness held true!Promising review all the parts zip together to make it escape-proofPromising reviews:Butter has torn up every stuffed toy he’s ever owned and Baby is the most durable toy he’s ever had. This toy is tear-proof. It’s the best.I’m so impressed with the durability of this product that I feel compelled to write a reviewI was reluctant to spend $40 on this thing, but after a year and a half it’s the only thing that’s lasted. I would pay $100. I don’t know what they make it with, but it’s extremely chew-proof.Promising reviews:These fluffy little ducks don't have any signs of tearing from where he's chewed (and I assure you, he's tried)She had her first one for six months and it was very durable, especially because she was always chewing and trying to tear it apartPromising review:There are teeth marks all over the ball and the rope is a little frayed, but both are holding up fabulously.Promising reviews:Suction is powerful and the cable is strong and chew-proof.My daughter is 42 pounds. So they're not kidding when they say it can hold a bit of weight!!Promising review:It’s been a few months and I can officially say these things are dog-proof! Constant jumping, playing, and muddy paws but my couch is still in perfect conditionPromising reviewI tried everything to keep my little dog out of the cat's litter box. This is the only thing that worked.Promising reviews:The quality is top notch and they have not deteriorated even after hours of playThe felt balls are tightly created so felines cannot readily tear them apart.Promising reviews:so far he hasn't been able to break or bite whole pieces off, and they're definitely too big to be swallowedIt's the perfect size and material so they can't damage or get injured on it This ceramic fountain has solved all my problems, and the best part is that both of my cats actually love drinking out of it! It's hefty and doesn't shift around as they are trying to drink, and there have been no attempts to dismantle it either.Promising reviewmy biggest challenges with a water fountain is my one cat who tries to dismantle every one we try. I had hoped given that this is ceramic and heavier, she'd have a harder time knocking it over or flipping the lid. We've had this in use for about a week, and so far, so good!Promising reviews:My one cat has always torn fountains apart because he's rude lol but this is one he can't get apart. Moral of the story, they love it and they drink A LOT more water now, and it doubles as a play toy.Promising review:Our pup has chewed through two other beds and a blanket, but despite lots of effort, she hasn't been able to make a dent in her Laylo bed or covers yetpleasantly surprised to find that they're also top-notch quality, stand up to tough chewers/diggers, and totally washable.Promising review:Additionally, we have one cat who is an aggressive scratcher. We are six months in and he has only made some dents in the top. This is a very robust cat scratcher.
